Why "With Spaces" vs "Without Spaces" Both Exist
Nearly all platform limits count spaces — X, meta tags, ads, SMS. The without-spaces figure survives mainly in translation billing, certain academic submission rules, and some publishing contracts that price per character. The counter shows both so you never have to guess which convention applies.
The SMS Encoding Trap
A single SMS holds 160 characters — but only in the basic GSM-7 alphabet. Add one emoji or non-Latin character and the entire message switches to UCS-2 encoding, dropping the limit to 70 and potentially splitting one message into several billed segments. Marketers sending bulk SMS check their copy here first for exactly this reason.
Beyond Characters
Live word count serves essay and article targets; sentence count flags run-on-heavy writing (average sentence length above ~25 words hurts readability scores); paragraph count helps format for mobile screens; and reading time (based on ~200 wpm) is the number blog platforms display at the top of posts.
